England's regions each have their own appealing characteristics. The southern coastline with the white cliffs of Dover, traditional seaside resorts, the Isle of Wight - a renowned area for sailing - and Cornwall's picturesque coves and golden beaches. The magnificent Eden Project showcases over a million different plants in two gigantic Biomes - the biggest conservatories in the world.
Honey coloured Cotswolds, wild sweeping heather moors in the rural Peak District and the natural beauty of Cumbria, the Lake District; England's landscapes offers a superb variation in ambiance.
Explore ancient wonders. The amazing stone circles at Stonehenge date back to 1500BC. Roman remains; the Roman Baths at Minerva's temple in Bath, are one of the best preserved sites north of the Alps, and in the north Hadrian's Wall spans from Carlisle on the west coast to beyond Newcastle on the east coast.
English towns and cities
England's cities are enjoying a design revival. Controversial designs have produced modern award-winning bold architecture and a change of perspective. Historic maritime Liverpool, one of the world's great music and sporting cities, featuring more museums, galleries and theatres than any other city outside London, is growing fast in popularity after being named Europe's Capital of Culture for 2008. Newcastle, an exciting cultural city features the strikingly lit Millennium Bridge, which slowly opens likes a giant eyelid for passing ships. Birmingham, England's second largest city, offers a world class culture scene, enterprising business, prominent exhibitions and a recently transformed city centre. Manchester is often regarded as England's coolest city with modern landmark buildings, an excellent University, arts, entertainment and, of course, football.
Towns and cities steeped in history, beautifully reflect their past. Canterbury is dominated by its Cathedral, the burial site for many ancient Kings. Stratford-upon-Avon, the birth and burial place of William Shakespeare, celebrates the 16th century in which he lived. York is a delightful walled city that honours its past inhabitants, from the Vikings and Romans onwards.
